Vertical Submarine Space Installation "John Martin: the Butcher and the Surgeon"

During Art Stage 2015, artist group Vertical Submarine opened their exhibition “John Martin: the Butcher and the Surgeon” in Golden Mile complex. By the end of 2015, it’ s our honor and great pleasure to announce that this magnificent installation is coming to NUNU FINE ART. For the very first time, the gallery is going to reform its interior space to represent the show.

Vertical Submarine is a collective group of artists originating from Singapore, including Joshua Yang, Justin Loke and Fiona Koh. The group was formed in 2003 and the name was taken from a word “subvert” that is rotated to be vert-sub and expanded to form Vertical Submarine. Their intricate installations complex with texts often hidden a sense of humor and conveys metaphors. Collectively they have won several awards, like Singapore President's Young Talents Award of 2009, Credit Suisse Artist Residency Award 2009, and Celeste Prize 2011. The initial story of the exhibition is about the serial murderer that took place at 1992 in Singapore, and the criminal was sentenced to death eventually. The artists took the story as an impetus for the project, creating a surreal space with upside-down room, faint gleam of lights that turn on only when visitors come in, and scattered texts. Besides the installation, Vertical Submarine has also created a brand-new art works “the Gray’s Anatomy” specifically for this upcoming exhibition. The artwork imitates appearance of a book but with a chopper in it, hoping audience to digest the multiple meaning of anatomy.

The audience could perceive the value of the installation by their viewing experience. Nothing like traditional approach of collection, viewers collects part of the creators’ spirit and concept. Feedbacks from the audience will turn back to nutrient the artwork. This valuable experience is what we hope to bring to Taiwan art field.
